What I Do

My Counseling Approach and Philosophy I believe that counseling that focuses on client strengths and action plans is the best way to help a client overcome mental health issues. I try to help the clients and families understand the specific diagnosis we are working with and develop a treatment plan that will give them a sense of direction and hope. I use cognitive-behavioral therapy to help the client develop new skills and understanding. I educate the client on the bio-psycho-social model and explain that medication can be important, but the psychological and social issues must be addressed to ultimately resolve the problems. I believe for many clients, medication is needed like training wheels on a bike: once you learn to balance yourself, you no longer need the training wheels (medication). In my practice on the South side with Dr. Jose Hernandez, I had about 60 active clients and about 7 clients are able to stop taking medication each year. I have now moved my office to the North side and I am very excited about it! I agree with Matthew McKay and David Harp in Neural Path Therapy, that new experiences develop new synaptic connections in the brain. The more we practice the new behaviors, the more connections that are made. In some cases, the brain can "correct" itself enough that the medication support is no longer needed. I use a direct, coaching style to motivate my clients for change and support my clients to believe they can change. Then I develop specific action plans for the client to carry out between sessions that reinforce our counseling goals that lead to success!
